Adverse events in childhood can effect us throughout life.
Maternal trauma or stress during pregnancy has been shown to cause problems in physiological, psychological and sociological well being that can have a lifelong impact. Events such as abandonment, sexual, psychologically or physically abuse. Witnessing abuse or having a parent with mental illness can also cause profound negative and lasting effects.
In adulthood they can present as anxiety, panic, adhd or sleep disturbance and are thought to be the root of many emotional, behavioral and self deprecation behaviors as well as physical health problems because of the impact on brain development during childhood.
There is treatment for trauma, but it is not easy or quick process. Therapy such as CBT or Trauma based CBT work well. DBT and EMDR therapies have been shown to be helpful. Medications such as antidepressants can reduce the symptoms of PTSD.
