 Women’s Mental Health Services

Women can have unique life-experiences that greatly affect their mental health and it is important to have support during these times of challenge and change. This is why, here at Well Space we are dedicated to understanding, and supporting the needs of women.

Positive life changes such as college, career, marriage and parenthood can sometimes cause stress and exacerbate mental health symptoms because of internal or external pressures. Negative experiences such as discrimination because of gender or sexual orientation, emotional, physical or sexual trauma, divorce,  job loss, poverty, loss of a family member or loss of a child can take a toll on your physical & mental health.  We are here to help and support you.

Here are some other experiences that seeking help can make a tremendous difference in your quality of life:

Anxiety

Feeling as though you are unable to relax, overwhelmed, worried and on edge. These are a few ways in which anxiety can manifest as symptoms. Some people have physical symptoms such as sweaty palms, palpitations, or shortness of breath. For others, anxiety turns into constant and excessive thoughts about things that have happened or may happen.  Sometimes they can become catastrophic thoughts about the future. “Control freaks” tend to be those for which anxiety turns into a need for control.  Anger outbursts or being irritable can also be one of the many ways in which anxiety is expressed. At Well Space, we know the many faces of anxiety and want to explore your unique way of experiencing it and help you tackle it. Our wholistic approach includes mind-body interventions, exercise, sleep optimization, supportive psychotherapy, and, when needed, medication. We use an evidence-based approach to help you regain control over your life.

Major Depressive Disorder

There are different ways of experiencing depression. Some people may feel low, apathetic, and withdrawn, while others describe their symptoms as a sense of dissatisfaction and lack of interest in daily activities. In severe depression you may have negative thoughts about and wonder “if life is even worth living?”  We will treat your personal experience of depression with a plan that takes into account your unique condition and personal goals. Depression often required a wholistic approach  including therapy, lifestyle interventions nutrition and sleep, in addition to medication. With this approach, you will notice an improvement in your symptoms and a better quality of life before you know it.

Sleep-deprivation can increase already bothersome symptoms and make it difficult to feel better. Insomnia can stem from worry, depression, unhealthy sleeping habits, as well as many other issues that can steal precious rest. We will discuss your sleep patterns and help find a solution by addressing treatable causes of insomnia (such as anxiety and depression). By approaching insomnia from different approaches, we see a significant improvement in sleeping patterns with the majority of our clients.

Some of the other symptoms we commonly treat are ocd, panic, mood disorders, trauma, ptsd, seasonal symptoms, phobias, social anxiety, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, somatic disorders, personality disorders, new parent stress, marital stress and difficulties with life adjustments.

Perinatal Psychiatry

Becoming a parent is one of the most exciting times in a person's life. Unfortunately, such a blissful event can also be accompanied by sometimes overwhelming responsibilities, sleep deprivation, and hormonal imbalances. These factors can lead to the worsening of preexisting mental health conditions, or the development of new ones. Sadly, many parents feel isolated and struggle with their mental health during this time. We are specialty trained to support those who are facing the challenge of becoming a mother or a father. We offer dedicated expertise in perinatal psychopharmacology and can help you explore the best treatment options to support your mental health during pregnancy and postpartum. We also provide a consultation for patients who may already have a trusted provider and seek a second opinion.

   Birth Trauma

Birth trauma can be different for everyone. Whether it is the result of a difficult or  high risk pregnancy, experiences during birth such as induction of labor, unmanaged pain, assisted delivery by forceps or vacuum, an emergency cesarean birth, and other unexpected experiences can lead to birth trauma or post traumatic stress disorder. Some women may experience anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, nightmares or feel less attached to the baby.
