As women, in society we are often expected to be the primary caregivers for our families and community. We are expected to take care of children, partners, parents, and friends, often putting their needs above our own. While it is admirable to be nurturing and supportive to others, it is also important for women to remember to take care of themselves.
At our women-focused psychiatry practice, we see firsthand the toll that constantly putting others first can take on a woman's mental and physical health. Lack of self care can result in increased symptoms of burnout, stress, anxiety, and depression. Taking care of yourself is not selfish - it is necessary for well-being. Just as the saying goes, "the grass is greener where you water it," women need to prioritize self-care because spending time on yourself will positively affect all areas of your life as well as your overall health.
We recommend taking time to recharge by carving out time in your schedule to relax and participate in activities that bring you joy. This may mean planning time to take a walk in nature, enjoy a bubble bath, practice some yoga, or spending time on a hobby you love or even finding a new one. There are countless ways to care for yourself in a meaningful way that will allow you to be fully present for others.
When you take care of yourself, you are better able to care for others. You are able to show up as your best self, with more energy, patience, and compassion to give to those around you. So, don't neglect your own needs - prioritize yourself and make sure you are nurturing your mental health and protecting your well-being.Remember, you deserve to make self-care a priority and watch as the grass becomes greener in all areas of your life.
Take time for yourself, be kind to yourself and make time for things that bring you happiness. You’ve earned it.
